Single mode fibre optic cabling is designed to only carry one ray of light. Single mode is generally used for fibre links up to 50 miles allowing speeds of up to 10Gbit/s. There is little price difference between multimode and single mode fibre optic cable, however single mode laser equipment is more expensive than multimode because it is designed to launch to many killometres in distance.
Single mode fibre optic cable typically has a core size of 9 and a cladding diameter of 125, known as 9/125 or OS1.
